5 great summer vegetables to grow at home

Nothing conjures images of outdoor activities like barbequing, playing sport and putting around the garden like summer. It’s a season of warmth, light and life. Think about how much more exciting summer will be if you take the time to plant vegetables that will produce bright, beautiful, healthy goodies you can pick from your very own backyard.

To give you some inspiration, here are five excellent summer vegetable you can grow at home.

Tomatoes

Most tomatoes begin to fruit eight to 10 weeks after they’re planted. The best time to have your tomatoes planted in the ground is in late spring or early summer. If you have seedlings in their beds by October or November, you will be happily plucking juicy bright red tomatoes in the summer.

Cucumber

Cucumbers are another plant that will produce a harvest in eight to ten weeks. In temperate regions of Australia, the best time to sew cucumber seeds is the spring months. Remember to give your cucumber vines enough room to run and space your seedlings at least 60cm apart.

Chillies

If you like a little heat in your food, nothing is better than picking fresh chillies from your garden. There are many varieties of chillies, and you will have to do your research to determine which ones may be the most palatable for you. It may take nine to 11 weeks before you see your first chilli, but if you plant in August or September you will have them by summer.

Capsicum

If you love to cook, it is always handy to have a capsicum or two on hand. Growing a few plants can mean that you will have a regular supply. Planting in October and November will guarantee a crop in 10 to 12 weeks.

Pumpkin

While you won't be able to enjoy the fruits of your labour from this plant until the winter months, it’s vital that you start planting pumpkin in summer. Pumpkin seeds need the warm summer soil to germinate.
